Post subject: | followup on Flight704's Nov 27 NV300 inquiry |
Hello folks, On Nov 27 Flight704 inititated a (to me) very intersting thread about using a NV3500 tranny in his/her Dart. Good discussion with certified wizards contributing, but to me it kinda died out. Well this weekend a board wizard rang my bell and made me remember that thread with a suggestion I look at using a New Venture NV3500 (Getrag (HM290 or MG5) tranny. I was down the T5 road but suspicion a T5 may not last long in a 5300 pound vehicle. My application is a '64 D100 with a built slant six and a 3.91 sure grip on an 8 3/4 axle set. I did the A833OD 4 speed swap, now want to try a 5 speed, but not the NP with the granny gear. Seems the NV3500 for a '00 to '04 Dodge Dakota might even bolt directly up, according to urban legend. (1) But I haven't found the gear ratios for a 2000 3.9 litre engine Dodge Dakota 4x4 toploader ranny I picked up, and hope someone knows or knows a site to look at so I can think about the gears and their spacing. (2) The tranny has a flange on back for the transfer case, but no transfer case came with it. Is this any problem with using it for my 2wd app? (3) I have seen sixinthehead's in his car, but think his was a 6 cyl tranny...will the 3.9 fit a slant six, and does this then get into changing flywheel and clutch plates to accomodate the splines on the NV? Thanks! rock '64d100 |

Post subject: | a member sent me these ratios and this site |
Well, the forum never fails. While not knowing answer to my flange and clutch quest's, within minutes of post a forum member sent me this site and this ratio set: http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/nv3500_spec.htm NV3500 and the narrow ratio used in 2500LD's is close to the T5 at: 1st - 4.01 1st 3.49 2nd - 2.32 2d 2.16 3rd - 1.40 3rd 1.40 4th - 1.00 4th 1.00 5th - 0.73 5th .73 Getrag Corvette 1st - 4.23 1st - 2.97 2nd - 2.53 2d - 2.07 3rd - 1.67 3rd - 1.43 4th - 1.23 4th - 1.00 5th - 1.00 5th - .71 6th - 0.79 6th - .57 best wishes to all! rock '64d100 |

The 3.9 V6 uses the LA (small block) V8 bellhousing pattern, not the same as the G (slant-6) bellhousing pattern. |

Dan, Great advice, as always! I have one of AndyF's tranny adapters. Since Andy's fits the V8 automatic and will go to a 318, might it be possible to use the 3.9 with Andy's plate onto a slant six? That would be a pleasant finding! rock '64d100 |

An adaptor that'll put a V8 automatic transmission behind a slant-6 should work just fine to put a V8/V6 bellhousing + manual trans behind a slant-6. You may need to do some clever figuring on how to take up the extra space created by the adaptor plate. |
