Apparently there is a problem matching crankshaft ends to traansmissions at some point through the year models. I found the following statement that doesn't make sense to me:
Quote:
The crankshafts from 1961-1968 used a small pilot 1.960 od/ 1.530 id. They were a forged casting as well. Crankshafts after 68-76 used the large pilot 2.160 od/ 1.805 id and are all forged castings.
Shouldn't "Crankshafts after 68-76" say "Crankshafts during 68-76?"

Finally, doesn't this mean that pre '68 and post '68 cranks and transmissions don't mix?

Post Finally, I found this on my own hard drive and haven't located where I got it yet.

Up to 1967 has the small crank hub and pocket. From 1968 forward uses the larger pocket.

This means:
1)1968+ Engines can use any tranny, provided you have the correct flywheel for your crank, or use an annular pocket ring for the crank if using a pre-68 torque convertor .
2)Pre-68 engines can't accept late style torque convertors, you can either swap the crank to a post-67, or get a custom torque convertor (except in the case of the 1978+ Lock Up tranny which is post-67/big pocket only)

Thanks.

Oops, I failed to specify that I'm looking about manual transmissions.

Early engine use a pre-68 flywheel...
Post-68 use a "late" flywheel...

Spend some $$$ and have a machinist make a ring so you can 'bush' a late flywheel to use on the early crank (not my first choice for the $$$).

Ack. I saw the word pilot and thought they were talking about the pilot on the end of the shaft. I hadn't paid attention to the actual measurements involved.

Apparently all end-of-shaft pilot bearings are the same?
