Does anyone know if the Mopar rebuild kit for the A-904 makes it suitable for a modified 360? I already have the small block A-904 ( it was left in the trunk of the "Roller" I bought). So would I be succesful using it behind a 360 if I upgraded/rebuilt it?

i had great luck with one in my Ford P/U and i know of at least one person here in SA that runs a fairly fast 360 powered car with a 904 behind it...they will take the abuse if built.

There are actually 3 different designation of the small torqueflite trans. The A-904, A-998, and A-999. These transmissions look the same from the outside, except for the bellhousing bolt pattern (slant six, or V-8). The differences, are inside. The A-904 was the weakest (torque capacity) Next was the A-998, the A-999 was the strongest, This trans (A-999) was the trans used by the factory behind the 360 engine (not counting the A-727, A-500 or A-518).

Well, that is encouraging.
Can I buy a transmission overhaul kit for the A-904 that will "turn it into" a A-999? I would really like to use this transmission since it is free, except for the re-build part.

No, the "rebuild kits" give you the "soft" parts. The parts that make a 998 or 999 are "hard" parts. It has been too many years since I have done any trans work, except to "freshen up" my own, I don't remember exactly what is different. I know there are more clutches, but don't know if the complete clutch drum needs to be changed, or just the piston. things like that. The A-999 has a double wrap rear band, this required a change to the inside of the case. I don't think that change was ever incorpoated into the six cyl case. The best bet for upgrading a slant six 904 is the get a v-8 trans and swap the internal parts. As for your v-8 trans, open it up and see how many clutches are in each clutch pack. It might be the "heavier" unit.

So if I have a small block A-904 can I just put in more clutches in the clutch pack to beef it up? What else do I need to do to handle more torque?

Clutch brands vary in thickness, some you can jam an extra steel and friction in the pack, you can also machine down the inside of the drum to fit more clutches in. A 904 can be built to hold a 360 for sure, there have been many articles written about it, try a Google search and see what comes up. Then get a MOPAR trans guy to build you one.

You cannot just add clutch plates/discs. It requires the correct clutch drum/piston, to hold the additional clutches. The A-904 (six) has 3 plates ant 3 discs in the front clutch, 2 plates and 3 discs in the rear clutch. The A-904 LA (273) N/A. A-998 LA (318): 4 plates, 4 discs, front, and 3 plates, 4 discs, rear. A-999 LA (360): 5 plates, 5 discs, front, 3 plates, 4 discs, rear. This info is for non lockup units. Lockup may or may not be the same, I have not worked on a lockup.
