I just bought another Slant engine (73 Dart) with a 904 auto and want to do some work to it. I read either in one of my books or a post here on milling the heads to bring up the compression to about 9.5:1 which also brings up some horsepower. But how much does it bring it up? If this is true, can I acurately bring a 225 slant up to 200HP without having to put additives in the tank? I also got the harness to convert my 67 to electronic ignition and the front disc assembly from the same car. so I will eventually convert to LBP wheels. What I use the car for is the following: The car is for cruising. No racing is intended. I want to keep the car as original looking as I can. Currently has a supersix installed, and I would like to continue using this with some dutra's added later. next week I will be making some rounds to locate a machine shop that can do this work for me. Hot tank the block and what ever else is recommended. I know from reading here that others have already done buildups on a slant so your input will carry a lot of weight on what I would like to do. I would like to hear some suggestions as to what to ask to have done to it. More questions to come after hearing from you. can I put a limit on $1500 into the entire engine buildup? please offer some ideas. |

Increasing the compression alone will not give you 200hp....adding a cam (mebbe the Erson 270) and some headwork could get you there. The Super 6 and Dutras would go nicely with that. $1500 seems reasonable. |

$1500 seems entirely reasonable. I agree w/ Sandy; shave the head, put in a bigger cam and think about some oversize valves. I can't validate any horsepower figures, but I can say it's an impressive seat of the pants difference. |
