'65 Valiant. I'm sure I read on here that wider shoes on the rear gave a wider track, as the width was added "outboard." However I just discovered that the distance between back plates on my newly acquired LBP, 2.5" shoe equipped, rear end is shorter than on the SBP rear end by at least 2 inches. Normal?

1963-1972 7 1/4" A-body backing plate to backing plate = 53.200"

1973-1976 7 1/4" A-body backing plate to backing plate = 51.400"

So yes,if you have a 73-76 a-body 7 1/4" A-body rear it is narrower from bp to bp.
All other dimensions are the same.

You read wrongly. The drum-to-drum width is the same, but the housing itself is shorter to accommodate the wider brakes.
