Does anyone have a recommendation for a just barely streetable cam for an automatic, Duster/Valiant? I want the most cam I can put in a SL6 and just be streetable, not a daily driver, just enough to go to the local burger hang out and race on the weekend. All other mods necessary to support the cam will be made.

That's kind of what I'm looking for... the fattest cam that I can run with a Super Six, 1.7 / 1.44 valves, stock converter and 3.23 gears. I've been looking at the Erson 270 but wonder if it's a little too much. I don't mind a little lumpiness but I do want it to have good street manners and decent botom end.

about the erson 270, I haven't installed mine yet (and anyway I'm swapping out the 904 and in a 833) but we installed the erson 270 in a friend's auto car and it's great. I did avdanced it 2º more (that's a total of 6º advanced instead of the built in 4º advanced grind) but it idles good with a 1.7 1.44 MP valves mildly ported (speed ported) head and 3.31 gears. Running recurved dist (8R) and 14 initial with 3.31 gears, and holley 2 bbl 500 cfm

My Valiant 225 is stock, but my non-Mopar V8 car picked up 3 tenths with a higher stall converter (2500) while using a mild Edelbrock performer cam. I think the cam and converter go hand-in-hand, especially when you say "barely streetable" cam. You will need a higher idle speed and will lose some low end torque and if your car is heavy and your gears are highway oriented, I don't think you'll be happy until you're getting up in rpm's. You probably already know this.

You didn't specify if you would stay with a stock converter or not. For any kind of substantial performance with an auto, this is the only way to fly.

I just want to be able to drive to the Saturday afternoon hot rod gathering at the burger joint, open some eyes, then Saturday night get some RESPECT.

on a related subject how wild a build can you get with the stock cam that was used in the early-late 70's?this is supposed to be the cam to use according to the mopar 6 cyl. book

I run an Erson 270 in my pickup and have thus far it has been very streetable, and that's w/ an automatic and stock converter. I also took .090 off the head, which has me up around 9:1 compression, and probably helps keep it drivable. The only thing I will say is that I can definetly tell the difference between my truck being loaded and empty, but I didn't build it to see regular use "as a truck" either. Considering the weight difference between a car and full size pickup, I can't imagine it would cause you problems. In fact, you could probalby go a fair bit more radical and still keep it below the ragged edge. Iirc, other members of have run 280+ durations w/ over .5 inch lifts in cars that saw a lot of street use.

In the Mopar Six Cylinder book I think it says that the P4529342
cam is just streetable with a manual transmission. It is 268/208/56 with 0.460 lift ( adv duration, dur @0.050 and overlap). Is this another piece of bad information from the Mopar Six Cylinder Book? That statement had a large influence on my cam choice.

The cam in the above discussion is the Hyper-Pak cam, not the "342".
Hyper-Pak is 276/208/44 lift = 0.43".

I would recommend a 2600-2800 stall converter (9.5 or 10" diam). This will really help on your accel, esp in stoplight action. Unless you hammer it, a converter like this will almost act like stock and mileage will hardly suffer at all.

The Erson 270 cam will probably work with a stock converter as it is only 220deg @ 0.050", but will benefit from a higher stall.

Good headwork gives a HUGE gain and doesn't affect streetability at all. Spend some good $$ here and you won't regret it. Mike Jeffrey is a great guy with tons of experience on Slant heads. He will be at St. Louis and probably Houston races.

Would anyone know a good converter reccomendation for the erson 270?
Also would a small cam such as the mopar 244 benefit from a slightly higher stall converter??

Even a stock cam benefits from a high stall converter, if you are trying to better your track (60 ft mostly) times. The 244 MP works well with a stock conv and I believe you might make a 270 Erson work with a stock converter.

I can tell you that even with a 244, you will gain 0.3-0.6 sec in 1/4 mile time with a 2800 stall converter for minimal sacrifice in mileage (~1mpg) and driveability.
