Any tips for getting the Intake and Exhaust manifold off when they're glued on with a 30 year old gasket? We tried yesterday, took off all the bolts (almost positive we got them all) and unbolted the exhaust, but the sucker wouldn't budge. Even tried prying it off a few times, but it just wouldn't happen. Is there a trick to this that I'm missing? Because I am seriously considering just taking it somewhere and paying to have someone else deal with it.

Edit: Also, any reason that there is coolant pouring out of the rear most exhaust bolt hole? THe front one seems like the same type, but no coolant pouring out of that one. Anyway to stop that while I try this again?

Yes its normal for water to come out - the water jacket is right behind it. Sometimes you have to put some thread sealer on it so water doesn't come out.

Those are supposed to be studs not bolts. If they came out with the nut on them then the nut was seized to the stud.

I don't recall ever having that much trouble removing the manifolds. Sometimes you'll find the exhaust manifold warps but still even then with the effort your describing you would of worked them loose. On the stock setup theres one nut thats tricky to get to that you may of overlooked - its on the bottom row, either on cyl #4 or 5. You should have removed 13 nuts in total.

THanks for the info. That's what I thought about the water jacket. It seemed like there should have been a stud there. Going to try again and count the bolts this time.

There's one very difficult nut to find located under the choke heat stove. The gasket itself is not capable of holding the manifolds in place; a manifold that actually feels stuck rather than takes a little force to remove probably has one missing nut still in place.

Considering that this engine hasn't been built in close to 20 years, finding a mechanic that knows any more about it than you do might be a bit tricky.

Alright, now I KNOW I didn't get that one. I bet that's what was holding it in place. Thanks so much!

I hate it when that happens.................. (especially when the nice diagram showing all the nuts/bolts omits showing the one that's still holding your part on)

Alright, it's off! Thanks alot, guys. I missed the bolt behind that heat sheild. After I took that off, the manifolds popped right off.

Sounds like the first time I pulled my manifolds.

Ahhh, good times... :)

Couple of quick questions...

1. THere was a bracket for what I'm pretty sure is the kickdown linkage on the stock manfiold, but nowhere that it can bolt up on the Hookers. Where can I put this? Do I need it?

2. I'm not sure I hooked the throttle linkage to the carb up right. Does anyone have a picture of the linkage for the Holley 1945 (I think that's what my carb is, 74 Dart) so I can be sure of this?

Boy are these things loud! I definately need some mufflers.
