First of all, I was thinking back this morning about all the questions I've had about my scamp&slant in the past years, and how easy it was to come on here and have my questions answered by you guys. There is more years of experience right here than any shop or book could provide. I want to thank all you guys'n'gals for making it so darn easy.
------------------------
Now for the question:
I am getting ready to start a newly built engine; I packed the oil pump full of vaseline, turned it over a few times by hand and a few times by key, poured all the oil over the rockers, and hooked up the Low Oil Pressure Light -since I dont have the time yet to find the sending unit for a gauge. Now for the question part, when I turn the key to the "run" position the red oil light is lit up, when I turn it over a few times the light is still on. I am wondering if the light will only go out after the engine is running and producing constant pressure? should I risk starting it up while the light is on. I know oil is getting past the pump because when I took out the plug to put in the Oil Light sender, oil came pouring out.

You shouldn't have a problem firing it up. The sending unit does "close" until it sees pressure. You can play it safe, and make yourself feel better, by pulling all six plugs, spin the engine over with the starter until you get pressure, then reinstall the plugs and fire it up. That way, you'll know that you are getting pressure, and there is oil in all the bearings.

Since I'm new to the world of Slants, I can't say for sure that this will work, but on my Pontiac engine I pull the distributor out and use an actual oil pump priming tool in a hand drill to spin the oil pump driveshaft until I see oil coming out of the rockers. This is a great way to feel safe that you have plenty of oil where is should be.

It seems to me that just cranking the engine over to see oil pressure isn't really addressing the issue of making sure you have oil BEFORE the bearings move on each other.

Doesn't work on a slant-6. The oil pump and the distributor are both driven directly, each by its own pinion, off the same gear worm cut into the camshaft.

That's why you use assembly lube when installing the bearings, and pack the oil pump with vaseline.

When i change my oil i pull the coil wire and turn it over until the oil light goes out. Might take 30 seconds or so . Then i fire it up. Could try that. Thanks Ron Parker. PS I use 5w30 oil Mobil 1 . :D

Assembly lube I understand but what does packing the oil pump with vaseline accomplish? It seems like that would only delay the delivery of oil.

It primes the pump by creating a hydrodynamic seal between the gerotor lobes, so the pump picks up oil much faster than if it were spun dry. The vaseline is soft enough that it does not interfere with oil delivery.
