I have SBC (4") CragarSS wheels. Just got a 8 1/4 A-body rear with the 4.5 BC. I was thinking I stead of buying new 4.5 BC Cragars for the rear, I would knock out the studs and have a machine shop drill the axles at the 4" BC by drilling in between the orignal stud locations. Also drill the drums to match. Later when I do a disk brake conversion up front buy 4 new wheels of my likeing at the 4.5 BC. Knock the studs out put them back in the 4.5 BC and get new drums.
Will the drums fit inside the wheel?
Does this seem unsafe?
I am I forgeting anything?
I know this seems like the long way around, but I don't want to be forced to do the fronts right now. I am thinking about changing wheel styles. If I stay with Cragars then yes just buy the correct wheels for the rear and be done with it. Not to many people would notice the different bolt circles. But it would look dumb to have Cragars up front and a completly different wheel in the back.

I think it would work.......

I would consider the studs disposable....... don't reuse them once you've knocked them out.

Isn't the brake drum register larger on the 4.5" LBP.
That means the 4" SBP wheels centers wouldn't go over the axle registers.
Run some cheap steels wheels painted body color till you know what you want to do with the front brakes and choice of wheels.

Cecil is correct. The large bolt pattern wheel register is significantly larger. Just changing the bolt pattern on a pair of axles is $50 around here and that doesn't fix the center register or the drums. Also, if you look at the axles you'll likely see there isn't space for 5 more studs. Bite the bullet and buy a pair of wheels.

I would bet the center on the Cragr will clear the big register. Cragars don't center on the register anyway, they center with the shouldered lug nuts. Moser can redrill your axles/drums and put in new studs at the same time.
