My only door/ignition key for my 64 Dart just broke off. Any suggestions out there for the cheapest way to get back going? Are there numbers out there I can get to have a key made from? Other suggestions to avoid replacing locks and ignition?

Assuming you don't want to re-core everything, call a locksmith.

Depends on where along its length the key actually broke. I once brought a key into the hardware store in two pieces. They were able to get it into the key grinder and fashion a new one for me. $1.49.

BTW- You'll need to go to a hardware store that has been around a long time, then find the oldest fellow there to do it. Most of the new big-box stores will just say no...

If that works then make a spare!!!

I've seen my Dad make a new key by hand. He clamped the old one and new blank together in a vise then used a triangular file to cut the teeth to match the old pattern. It was slow and tedious but it worked.

That's really all the machines do at the hardware store... they simply run along the teeth of your original with a guide, the guide is attached to a cutting wheel that forms the blank.

Notice that the rest of the form factor on the blank looks exactly like your original key (side grooves, length, etc).

Yeah but I'll bet that the machine has a lot more patience than myself, lol!
