Hey guys,

I am looking at some older A-Bodies to get back into Mopars. Mainly 63-66 Valiants/Darts/Barracudas. I am searching for a manual transmision
and keep finding alot of these cars with a 3 speed standard on the tree. I ran a search on here for some info, but came up short for what I was looking for. I would like the shifter on the floor! I was wondering if I could buy one of these universal shifters from summit:

http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch ... wordSearch

And use that to do the conversion if they will work. Some of the posts I found mentioned you will need a floor hump welded in, is this required to convert with an aftermarket shifter? I am not sure which 3 speeds came in these cars, could you gimme some advice on the swap guys?

-Mike

dont do it mike. those things are junky and won't last. 3 on the tree is kinda' cool, too. FEW younger people even know it exists.

definitely not worth hacking up a car to do....now, if you are putting a 5 speed in there.....

Thanks for the reply, I guess it is cool to see a column shifted car, I have only seen one in action in my short life! Ill keep my eyes peeled for a nice old A-body.

You just need to find a "hump" for the shifter, or make a custom one...

Then get yourself a bellhousing and A-230 3 speed out of a 1974-1976 A-body or a 1976-1979 F-body (these had floor shifted trannies, and the first gear is synchroed, and the ratio is "kind" for a manual tranny)

Usually the 1974-1976 cars that had this set up also came with disk brakes and an 8.25" rear too (in 3.21 ratio...)
