hello sl6 sages- getting ready to take apart the dashboard on my 76 feather duster for various repairs. windshield wiper pivots appear to be leaking rain water very badly. was thinking of ordering from schumacher these pivot seal kits for about $15.00 . does any fellow sage have any experience with them? would like to hear an accurate opinion about their effectiveness. thanks tons. paladin

Yep, these are good kits that solve the problem "all the way solved" when installed carefully and correctly. You can also install umbrella-type engine valve stem seals over the outside of the wiper pivots, per this thread

hello slantsix dan- thanks for your advice and further info from the thread you supplied. two questions remain. first, if the pivots are worn , will it still leak and if so what is the repair? doubt if you can get new pivot mechanisms. second is the donut seal referred to on the upper shaft of the pivot just below the knurled end for the wiper arm insert. is that donut which would seem critical supplied with the schumacher kit? thanks for your ongoing interest and advice. recently had new floors and frame supports welded in at a cost of millions. dont want to have to do it again, hence repair the leak. regards paladin

I'll be doing this same wiper pivot seal repair on a '71 Dart prior to replacing carpet and seats-

I probably won't get to it any time soon though, so please share your experience / any tips you can offer etc...
I'm curious just how much under dashboard and / or removal is required?

Thanks

The Schumacher kit does contain the "doughnut" seals, in very nice quality. Also included are gaskets, mastic strips, and zerk grease fittings for installation into the pivots. If they're worn, installing the zerks and pumping the pivots full of grease will usually make them good enough not to worry about, and not to leak.

Must you remove the wipers from under the dash (inside the car) or outside of the car (cowl)?

From under the dash.

I put the kit on our 65 Dart back in 2000 and never got water in the car again. Before it was a real problem that needed to be solved before the new carpet went in. I put in the zerks as well but never had to grease them after the install. I did drive the car in real heavy rain a few times with no problem. Now the car lives with the inlaws in northern Washington and is used as an extra car year round, still with no leakage. While the dash is apart is the time to do it! It was tight on the 65 and looks even worse on our 71 with the factory AC. I cut holes in some tube socks for my fingers and thumbs and it saved allot of scratches on the arms.

We put the kit on my son's Dart Sport and haven't had a drip one. To make it easier to install those "donut" seals, lube them liberally with liquid soap. We did drill and tap the pivot housings and installed the zerk grease fittings. The instructions suggest that filling the cavity inside the housing with grease will not only lubricate the pivot shaft, but the grease will also seal off any leakage due to a worn shaft.

Highly recommended,
Jerry

see my reply of a few minutes ago under "new to forum"
I used silicone brake fluid to slip the new seals over the post.
Liquid soap is just as good.
A really hard job and reinstalling the wiper pivot--esp. on the driver side was really hard.
But, once in, it passed the hose test.
I doubt there are any NOS wiper pivots out there, so it's a good idea to install the zerk fittings and fill it with grease. I doubt you'll ever need to grease it again.
I have a '57 Thunderbird that I've had almost 45 years. It's been sitting for 25 years and I'm starting to take it apart so I restore it to drive again before I die.
The early Birds are real easy to get parts for. There's nothing on that car I can't get NOS parts for.
Why are the MoPars so hard to get NOS parts for?
Does anyone know anyone who has a 427 FE engine or block for sale?
My 390 block is bad and the shop wants $2500 to sleeve it. I think the guy should be wearing a black mask and using a handgun?
For $4000 I can get a brand new iron 427 block. $7500 for aluminum which is not much lighter.
Saw a complete either 440 or 383 engine the other day the guy wants $400 for.
Anyone interested?[/b]
