While at work today, one of my co workers came up to me and knowing that I'm a fan of most things mopar, he asked me how much I know about slant sixes. :? In particular a neighbor of his just picked up a Yale forklift with a slant in it, and wants to switch it over to electronic ignition, because "he can't keep it running". I told him that while its not a hard conversion at all, it oughtta be able to be gotten running on its current setup fairly easily. My question is, (based on the fact that I haven't yet seen this thing) what type of ignition advance would something like this have (mech., and/or vacuum) and how much?? I have a couple of old wiring harnesses and ignition boxes that I could use to put together a "conversion kit" from, but unsure of what I oughtta do for a distributor.
Would a late 70s Volare one suffice or is there a better app?

It probably has no Vacuum advance and a governor since it operates in one certain RPM range most of the time. The mechanical advance is probably made to wind up and get to full advance at a low RPM (just guessing) I would take a look at it first to what kind of setup it currently has.

I've seen a forklift with a Datsun 1.2 engine and it had a governor, no vacuum advance and a very short advance curve. The springs in that distributor where very light with short-slot advance governor.

Depending on what generation it is, it may have electronic on it already.

All the Yales I have seen were mechanical advance only and used a velocity governor under the carb. :D

Don, you gonna be at the Larry Roesch swap this year?

Yeah, i'm planning on it unless I get stuck working... they took me off that lousy swing shift about 6 weeks ago, I'm on straight days for the forseeable future, but the fly in the ointment is that one of the other millwrights just got canned for a dirty random drug test, and I don't know what theyre gonna do yet as far as filling his spot. I'm not planning on setting up a booth this year though.
