In case you were wondering...
A 1 inch thick "high volume" oil pump impeller assembly will stick out of a factory diecast aluminum (5/8 impeller) housing by .295 of an inch.

I was expecting to see a .375 difference but it is not measuring out that way. Looks like the factory pump's "5/8 thick" impeller is really closer to .680 thickness.

Answer: so I know how thick the spacer needs to be. :roll: :wink:

Have you ever weighed a high volume oil pump, they only made them in cast iron and they weigh A LOT.

Yes I have. I just had the place that cast my new head make one from aluminum while they were at it.

Mild topic drift here.

I've read about the slant-6 oil pump drive gear being a bit fragile and having trouble with HV oil pumps. So do many (any?) folks run a NASCAR-style belt-driven oil pump on racing slants? Seems like that might solve both the fragility and weight problems.

is the high volume pump the same as a higher pressure pump?

whenever I used to mention using the heftier spring that mopar sells I was always shouted down. people said the pressure was too much.

........that was back in my .com days, soooooo long ago...

High pressure is not the same as high volume.
Pressure should be regulated to 45-55 psi and a stock regulator spring will give you that. A stiffer spring will produce more pressure at high RPMs but also puts more load on the drive gear

In some cases you need increased oil volume, like when you have extra oil demands from loose bearing clearances, feeding a turbo or an Accu-sump. (oil accumulator)
A high volume pump, with it's bigger impeller can get the pressure to 45-55 psi faster and keep it there at much lower RPMs, even when the engine is hot and the oil is thin.

So....? You just hack saw 3/4"~ off the end of a high volume pump ,,,,,then machine it flat to .300"~....(draw file would be fine)....

You do know a Supra electric pump bolts right on???? :roll: :wink:
