I have heard the jeep cherokee rear ends are good for early a body racing. Is this true? I have a 96 country 2wd and a 92 larado 4wd. Which would be the better choice?

Looks like a Cuda too me . 64 to 66 style Ill have to look at mine to see what year 65 or 66 most likely.

The 4wd Cherokees with the tow package are supposed to have Dana 44 rears. "Regular" Cherokees have I think Dana 30 or 33 rears.

the xj cherokees ( box cherokees ) only came with the 8 1/4 and the dana 35 I would STRONGLY recomend not going with the dana 35 the grand cherokees only came with the dana 44,35 do not use any dana out of a jeep (the new dana does not compare by far from the old dana)

well I work a jeep dealer parts counter and the dana 35 has a big problem with the axle seals leaking and the parts alone at list price are $150 each axle price 9 (matrix priceing structure) is about $200 each axle cuz to get the seal off you need to cut the snap ring and bearing off to get to the seal, book calls for 2 1/5 hrs each side also any dana iv ever seen come threw the shop has a howling sound ( the carrier bearings are junk I carry about 20 sets of them in stock for each dana axle ) and also you NEED to use synthetic gear oil in them or they will burn up real fast list price on the recomended gear oil is $26.00 a qt holds almost 2 qt

Both of my jeeps are the box type. How do I tell if they are 8 1/4 or Dana? Do you happen to know the flange to flange measurments. If they are 8 /1/4 are taller gears available? I have heard that the 8 1/4 is good as a /6 race rear, anyone know if this is true? Did these rears come as a sure grip? I think the 92 4wd might be suregrip.

Well, I don't have a ton of Jeep experience, but the Dana 35 rear in my buddies XJ (all unibody Cherokees are XJs, BTW) was pretty much indestructible, he drove it forever with black sludge in it and it just wouldn't quit. It never leaked. The Dana 30 in the front was another story, it leaked like a sieve and was noisy.

Most if not all 4wd XJs had "Command-Trac" or "Select-Trac," which is NOT a limited-slip differential but just a cool name for the transfer case.

The Mopar 8 1/4 rear is a acceptable rear for racing. But it needs to be from an 1970's "A" body, to get the correct width and spring perches. I don't think the 8 1/4 in a jeep is the same rear. Someone confirm this?

if you send me the last 8 of your vin I can tell you the type of rear and the gearing also if it is limited slip or not , the xj cherokees only came with a dana 30 in the front (also if it is a dana axle front or rear you can check the fill plug 99% will have the dana diamond stamped in it ) also jeep never used a dana 44 in the front of the cherokee or the grand cherokee the only one that used a dana 44 in the front was the wrangler rubicon

also I think the jeep rears are a bit to long for the a body

I saw an 8 1/4 in the JY in an Aspen 4 door. They are out there.

The barracuda is a 64 or 65. If the trunk says valiant it is a 64. The 8.25 axle was standard issue in countless chyrsler vehicles and may still be in production for the dakotas. They are definately out there. Any F deriavative (aspen,grand fury,dippy) could have had them, some did come with the 7.25. It's true that it is a PITA to change axle seals on the dana axles, but it is the same procedure as changing them on the 8.75.

I have a 65 Baracuda that says Valiant on the steering wheel but no where else. Thanks Ron Parker
