It arrived today, so what do I have and what do I need to do with it? The vacuum pot is marked as 8.5R and the blue tag on the side reads:

20 9
3755042

It appears to be shop worn but I don't believe it's ever been in an engine.

3755042 is a stock '73-'74 slant-6 passenger car distributor. Should work well as is, and if you want you can tweak the advance curves later.

I recommend the HEI upgrade, install a NAPA Echlin long-tip rotor # MO-3000 with Standard-Bluestreak CH-410X cap and (if you have a '74-down head w/spark plug tubes) put in NGK ZFR5N plugs gapped to 0.045".

I was hoping that it was a stock distributor and not a "high performance" unit with whacked out advance curves. Thanks for the quick answer!

Actually the curve on that guy is very lazy (at TDC it lays in something like 18-20 degrees of mechanical advance at highway speeds- and I can't get the 1 barrel car to rev high enough to get the whole 15R=30 degree limit either), and I have had some good success on "Beater Valiant" using this distributor set to 5 BTDC initial (stock it's set at TDC, and kind of "sluggy" with the stock 1 barrel A-904)...

Later you can set the curve on it easily as per previous articles...

Cool!
