Thanks for this great website guys. I have a 1971 plymouth duster I want to build the slant to take down a few of the 8 cyl. cars in town. the only problem is i have no idea where to start i will do a complete engine rebuild i am sending the motor out but most people i talk to say it isnt worth it bt i have my doubts and want to find out what parts i will need to convert this into a fast six sleeper. any help ? it is a 225cid motor. the sooner i find out what to throw in this car the faster i can get started thanks for any help. Joe

The best way is think how fast would be enough. Then we can put a close price to it and see if that is possible. Hope this helps Don.

Welcome aboard!

From what I've seen, getting power out of the slant six is more about optimizing what's there than bolting new things on.

Start by reading the articles HERE for ideas on block and head preparation, "stroking", EFI, turbos, etc. Pay special attention to Doug Dutra's work.

Then, start searching the forum for related subjects that interest you.

And don't forget to support your new-found power: Upgraded tires, brakes, suspension, etc.

Give us some idea of your vision, goals, and plan:
Is this going to be a race car, street/strip, daily driver ... ?
How far are youj willing to go?
Budget?
What transmission do you have?

There is a ton of information on this board. Have fun!

I would like a nice throaty street car that would be able to turn high 11:"s or even mid to high 12's i have about $4,000 to spend is there a way i can put a pic of my car up on the site ? it is a totally rot free 71 all metal no bondo. it really was owned by a little old lady its hemi orange with a black vinyl top and in really solid shape. has air and everything works. I just am sick of being "all show no go". thank you guys for your warm welcome. i look forward to hanging here . the budget of 4,000 is for the motor and tranny onl. the car runs now but the motor is tired its a matching numbers car i bought disk brakes to put on the front. and im currently getting some front end parts and new shocks

People who have had more experience than I may disagree with me, but a 12 second slant that is truly streetable is difficult.

You may want to beef your slant into the high 13's / low 14's, then add Nitrous if you want to dip into the 12s on the weekends.

There is the supercharger option to bring you into the 12's, but it will run more than your budget, plus the rebuild of the engine.

I have msn if any of you guys want to add me i have a few pics on msn .. I am really not very knowledgable about building a car i dont want to get ripped but i feel if i can find someone that has had sucess with buiding a slant in that budget and they told me what to buy i would start there i can pull the motor and put it back in, but other than simple parts changes im worthless with a wrench. im just not a real mechanical person.

Follow-up:

When setting your goals you might also want to consider the factory performance of an original A-Bodied car.

Here is some of the data from tests conducted back when the cars were new, dead stock, with street tires:

1970 Duster 340: 14.7 seconds
1974 Duster 360: 15.8 seconds
1968 Dart GTS 340: 15.2 seconds
1971 Demon 340: 14.5 seconds

So, if you can break into the 13s you are already faster than a bone-stock 340 Duster!

Also, take a look at the article on the Hyper-Pak slant six buildup here on Slant Six.org. That machine ran pretty quick.

im not to sure how to manuver this site yet i will check out the site you told me about. I guess 13 - 14's was shooting a bit high. I wonder if i just rebuild the slant to stock with a mild cam if it would at least spin the tires it dosent now

Damn Joe I went 12.47 at Valdosta this weekend in a 2400 lb full race car with 10.5 slicks . There is no way you could drive this car on the street. 8 in 4500 stall converter ,4.30 gears ect ect.. I would shoot for more like a high 14 second car. Unless you want to juice it but you better learn or no about juice because it could be expesive if you doint get it right. Thanks Ron Parker :D

The slanters are a great bunch of guys- you can get some great info
here. I know from experience that your goal at this point is a little bit
unrealistic. I built a 69 Dart to race in Vegas- spent more than $4000.
I didn't tweak it in totally, but it could have run 15's with what I did.
The guy on this site that runs low 12's (slantzilla) did it with nitrous
and many other modifications. To slap Muztangs with a 6 takes
more $$$$$.

You'd be amazed at how many V-8 cars you can whack with a low 15 second Slant car. Been there, done that. Build it to run that and put the hose to it and you are instantly in the 12 second range, and if you can get the car light enough without butchering it, you may be able to get an 11.

Sounds like a really nice Duster. I'd be hesitant to butcher it. :D

Technically, if its a Plymouth that color is called Tor Red

I am pretty much where you are, I have lofty goals and a limited budget. My EFI/Turbo project is taking much longer than I had hoped. Listen to the guys on here, most have really "been there, tried that". A $4000.00 budget is tight for what you want to do and I agree with what Slantzilla and Slanted Opinion said about how fast, fast car are. My brother's Mustang drag car runs 11's and it scares the hell out of me on the street. Nothing I would ever want to drive on a regular basis.

I am thinking that we may just rebuild this motor stock it is original and although i would like to boost the speed up a little so the darn thing would at least break the wheels coming off the line i would be happy. an ideas on cam or minor work i could do to boost it a little i want to get flow master exhust sytem is it possible for me to get dual exhust for a six ? if so where do i start what brands do you guys recommend? also maybe a 4 barrel carb and intake manafold would be cool if possible. right now im running the single barrel stock carb
