Well it is time to put it all together, however i am missing a few parts I have to order. One of those parts are the freeze plugs. I went to order some at Kragen and they are unavailable through their distributor, but they have 3 large boxes of them of various sizes.

Here is the question:
what size are my freeze pliugs in my 1966 Dodge Dart 270? I have a 225ci engine with the 3 freeze plugs holes. do I use brass or steel, or nylon?

On a 3 plug engine I always use a brass plug in the higher, middle location. You can't change that one with the manifolds on.

Actually the engine is completely disassembled so should I use brass in all of them?

On all the engines I've screwed together (including the slant, 273, 318, 340, 440 and a 392 Hemi), I've used brass freeze plugs. They'll never rust out.

To install, use a flat plate over the edge and pound the plug in flush to the block, with a big hammer

I dont need to use a sealant or anything to seal the plugs in there do I?

In the future, how do I remove the freeze plugs?

To remove a freeze plug, knock it into the block's water jacket, turn it sideways, grab it with plyers and pull it back thru the open hole.

To install, lightly sand or hone the hole to be sure the mating surface is clean.
I reinstall without sealer but other use a light coat of sealer.
If you use a sealer, use someting sticky or a glue, don't use RTV. I once used RTV on one engine and it has the bad habit of popping-out freeze plugs at high RPMs / high cooling system pressures.

If you have trouble finding brass ones, order the marine application plugs. They are far supperior to the steel plugs, especially if your car sits for some period of time.

Well I took a wire brush and a drill and cleaned the holes so they were smooth and clean (before I read the post) so score one point for common sense for me. This engine wont see hy-po use, so no worries on the sealer. I had to knock them in real good, so they should be okay.
Also used the brass ones.
