Hi folks,

I got in my new torque convertor from Midwest Torque Convertors. I am concerned about the gear diameter and number of teeth on it. I was very clear I needed it for a slant six Torqueflite 727 (a 1982), yet it came with a gear 13 1/4 inches diameter having 130 teeth. My 833OD tranny has 122 teeth on the flywheel and I sure don't remember it being 13 inches diameter so I am concerned the converltor won't fit a slant.

Having never had an automatic I gotta ask you Torqueflite guys, is this the right number of teeth for a slant convertor to starter match, and is the gear the right diameter? (It is going into a 1972 crank whose snout hole is 1.805. While the convertor snout is 1.810 I feel I can sand that .05 off if need be but need to get teeth and such right before pulling the 833 to swap in the 727.

might want to recheck your OD and ID of the crank flange
and converter, ID on the crank should be 1.82.

If the converter is right and ring count is right for a 82 \6 727
it should bolt just fine (using the right flex plate)
to a 72 crank and use the same starter as your
old 833 bell.


Install the converter to see if it
fits the bell right----install starter in the bell and look at the line up
before you install the trans...... should be able to tell if the
starter lines up with the ring teeth right.....

Auto trans and manules will not always have the same teeth count....

I spent much of Sunday reading old threads and saw a lot from you in there. I appreciate the voice of experience. This morning I took convertor to trans. shop and it slid in, mostly. Also looked at the valve body again and this is a 1988 727 for the slant, not an 82 as I had remembered incorrectly, though it wouldn't make a difference.

I say "mostly" because on first try the convertor would go over the splines but stop short of engaging the slots so it could go all the way down and seat in tranny properly. But for a fact I can report the 13 inch convertor ring fits a slant six 727 bell.

Then, and not to argue, Jeff, but in the forum threads are reported three large crank snout holes from 1.805 to 1.82 . I measured a crank snout of 1.805 ID when I rebuilt my 72 block...and see in the forum from April 21, 2006 where Rob (DI) reports the same 1.805. Then DD (Doctor Dodge) reports Sun Feb 27, 2005 "Appx. 1 9/16 (1.56) diameter for the "small hub" and 1 13/16 (1.81) for the "big nose" converter." And of course there is the 1.82 you report.

The problem I see is one of the TC sliding in the snout vs. press fit, because while 1.805 is "approx 1.81" neither measure is 1.82. I, having never messed with automatics don't know if the difference in the 2d and 3rd decimal place will make any difference at time of installation, so must ask. It would be real bad to have it all apart in a borrowed shop and not have it go in.

I also took a spare starter, ( one of the old mopar 225 starters), and it is obvious it won't fit the torqueflite housing at all. The gear housing is incorrect as are the holes in the casting mount. The Torquefliete bell needs one of the kind of starters that have a round extension or stub on the housing past the gear, like the new high torque ones have. So the question is: what starter goes to Torqueflites if the old time starter doesn't fit them? Am I destined to get a kinda new high torque starter as I used for my 833 bell?

But at least the convertor goes with the bell and soon maybe I will know what starter to try to mate up!

The manufacturing tolerances account for the variations people report.
I think the call-out was 1 13/16th (1.8125) with some +/- tolerence, most likely +/- .005

The ideal is a close "running" fit but most have clearance, some have a slight interferance fit that can be resolved with a little sanding the c-bore or the converter hub.

88 VALVE body mark?
they stopped /6 in 87, sure it's a /6 trans?
going to assume you did check it out.......
but had to ask........
likely just swapped in a 88 valve body
at some point.......

if from a truck, just look up a truck /6 application
in 87 (88 up is, Cummins, v8 or v6 only) should fit....... think I saw a listing for the
both the old type gear reduction and the mini-starter the
other day.......if I recall one listing fits all /6 in 87.........

I know for a fact that the A727a&b, regarless of year, after 62 can
use the Late mini starters......... but it might of changed after
they started making a slant only case 727- do not know for
sure there (even the old system using the adapter plate
between the A727a and slant used the same starter as
the V8).

Thanks very, very much guys! I am feeling better all the time that this swap is gonna go OK! It is great to have the three essential answers in one place...snout fitment, starter possibilities with /6 case, and torque convertor diameter re. the /6 Torqueflite case. Even though single pieces of the info is somewhat available in other forums and webpages, I still had not found the info as a group specifically related to the late model slant six bell Torqueflite as you all did for me. Thanks.

Since my truck at present is running the A833OD and will do so until the moment of truth when it is raised on a friend's lift in his tranny shop, I sure want it to slide in (except for cables and crossmember which I can deal with readily enough). I am betting the crossmember I had to make for the tailhousing on the 833 will do the Torqueflite just fine, but am reasonably sure that crossmember will at least support the tranny so we can roll the truck out of his place of business for final fitups if we have to do it that way.

Now I will just run down one of the many junkyard starters Slant Six Dan has listed in othe posts as being corollaries for the NipponDenso type. Jeff, I may well have incorrectly decoded the valve body stamp because this is the tranny that came from Chrysler's dyno at "the Slantworks" and is fundamentally a new tranny. Course they coulda put in a 88 valve body there. Later model for sure though, with a fine pedigree. Never in a car or truck, only in the lab.
