started my 1984 dodge van (225 /6) after a week of sitting and it revved up and stalled. started it again and it ran a little rough before smoothing out. I knocked down the idle and started off to work. That's when i noticed a noise coming from under the hood. Opened the hood and didn't seem to be anything obviously wrong. Sounds like the fan hitting the shroud but seems to be more towards the engine than the radiator (could be nothing more than the echo of the engine compartment). Took it home and switched the vehicles. Oil is up and antifreeze in the reserve. Rad hoses were heated and solid once warmed up. Any ideas?

Thanks for the responses. All excellent offerings, although this one seems to be the likely one. The noise seems to be coming from the center/rear of the engine. Any idea of how to fix it without taking the motor apart/out of the van?

Did test for movement of the fan blades. not moving (although did notice some movement of the water pump. Just a bit though. will have to keep track of that).
It's going to a mechanic (only one honest in the area now since my regular one left town) who is going to listen to it. Not sure if he can physically repair it (confined to a wheel chair after a traffic accident a couple years ago) but still a competent mechanic with alot of knowledge.
