I had just installed brand new bearings & races in my front wheels. Set the preload correctly and, during the process, installed new lug studs in both rotors. All the free "in/out" play of my rotors is now gone, but I still hear a rattling noise mosly from my front right wheel when going over small bumps. When I go over any harsh bumps (like small potholes), it sounds like a fairly severe clunk. The bumpstops are still there (and in surprisingly good shape) so I know it's not bottoming out, and there's no play in the wheel at all either. Is it possible it's just the upper or lower (or both) control arms moving around on old, shot bushings? |

if you have disc brakes, it could be that the pads and are rattling in the caliper. i would double check the bushings. they don't usually rattle, almost always clunk. also check the shock mount bushings. zedpapa |

I got underneath and started tapping the control arms and everything with a rubber mallet to see if I could duplicate the sound, and I found out that the two caliper bolts (the smaller ones that hold the caliper to the bracket) had worked loose already. I tightenend 'em down good and for now the noise seems to have gone away. I'm going to listen closely every time I go over a crappy road (oh wait, that's every road in downtown Spokane) to see if the sound developes again, and hopefully it'll stay gone.

I had a nasty little gremlin of a rattle in my 76 Aspen; it was very tinny, and only occurred on the hill down to my house, and only while on the brakes.... Turned out to be the splash shields on the inside of the rotors. |
