Okay...so it's got two too many cylinders, but I'm desparate for info.

Question: Will 1985 318 heads fit on a 1974 engine? I've heard that there's some kind of water passage differences (or ??)

Can someody help me here?

Just to clarify Slant Cecil's answer: Yes, the '85 heads will work on the '74 engine. The desirable '85-'89 head is the one with the casting number that ends in 302.
