Hey guys, I'm having a bit of trouble with the Holley 4779-2 on my 383. I rebuilt the carb recently, and tuned it up and got it running great. I went out of town for 2 weeks, and when I FINALLY got around to firing her up, she idled poorly, then flooded out. After a quick investigation, my secondaries were flooding my back two barrels out. Take out the sight screw, and fuel comes pouring out. I get the fuel to the correct level (sloshes ou tof the hole with you lightly rock the car) tighten everything down and its fine. I go on a 5 mile drive, and she starts to act up again...same symptom, secondaries flooding out. Run the floats down MORE, adjusted properly, idles for 10 mins, everything is fine, fuel level is holding good. Take it on a 25 mile drive, and it acts funny, but not stalling out...surging a big on the highway, especially on hills, and then she stalls out once on a sudden stop/turn. Get to my destination, idles decent, take a buddy for a ride, stalls out again on arrival from the ride. Guess what...secondaries flooded.

Adjust again, idle well, on a slope, so I can get it close. Drive down the block, trying to get it home, pull in to a parking lot to tune it again, and during the tighten down, the gasket starts decintegrating, and starts pissing out of pinholes under the set screw. Great. Start scrabbling for anything to use as a gasket, rtv, thread seal...something. Snug it down with the rubber washer from the aircleaner lid and drive it the 25 miles home, starts actiing funny again on arrival. Aside from a nerw set screw gasket, adnyone have an idea what this may be? Stuck/sinking float? So worn its backing out? Wrong sixed needle and seat for the float? Primaries are fine, no problems. This carb sat for 8 months befor ethe rebuild, but I didn't reuse any of the parts that come in the trick kit, but i did notice that the needle/seat sets had a smaller diameter than its counterpart, and when repaced, I replaced them with ones of equal size. Id rather not buy a whole new bowl/float set, but if I gotta, its cheaper than a new carb.

Thanks,
Dan

sounds like your new needle/seat on the secondaries is fubar-- or something is (dirt ) is caught between them

test your floats for a leak-- hold in container of fluid-- you will know if there is a problem

did you use a holley rebuild kit or someone else's? I had problems with non- holley needle seat arrangements

Yes, I used a Holley trick kit for the rebuild.

Check your oil level! My 70 383 Bee did that! Oil level would get high around town, 40 mile ride and it would be down. That motor was clean when opened up for a valve job!

I tried to fix it It had the problem before I rebuilt it. (1976) I just bolted on a Holley Street Domiantor intake with a 625 AFB

Rugtrucker,

I have been driving myself crazy trying to see how oil pressure affected a carb. I can't figger it out. What is it you fixed to keep gas from coming out of carb by working on oil pressure? Don't leave me fixating on this puzzle!

Who said oil pressure? My crankcase would get bunches of gasoline in it!! It would evaporate on a long run, and refill putt'n around town!

My fix was to pitch that Holley and put a bigger Carter on there. Wish I had that Holley now as it would be #'s matching for someone's 383 N96 Super Bee. Wish I'd never sold that car

I would say that it is a bad float based on the fact that adjusting the float down solves it for a short time.

well I ordered 2 new plastic floats and a hanger kit today, so we'll have to see. I'm going to pull it apart today and start checking stuff.

I was really puzzled about the oil thing too.

Did I clarify the oil question?
