Hey all,

I am totally new here and I am working on plans for my first /6 build. I recently bought a 66 Valiant with a 170 in it.

I've been reading this site for a couple of months as well as various books and web articles. This has led to many questions

One of the many things I was wondering is whether or not it is possible to drill out the drain holes in a small spark plug head, big enough to get the lifters out if you want to?

Am I asking one of those questions where all the experience guys roll their eye here  If so I appologize in advance!!!

Cheers,

Chris E.

   ...

Why not use a 81 and up hydraulic engine "wide valve cover" head?
Those have a larger push rod hole which makes "head on" lifter removal possible.

Why will you need to remove the lifters after the engine is in the car? :?

DD,

That is exactly why I asked the question:) thank you.

If I used the 81 up head I would still get the "better" combustion chamber and the hardened valve seats.

I would just have to use the older rockers and hardware right?

As for removing the lifters in the car I was thinking about trying a medium wild cam. I figured if I didn't like it, it'd be easier to change in the car.

The 81-up head will require it's own valve cover and also the rear bolt for the rocker shaft.

I have found that on a Slant car it is much easier to install and degree a cam with the motor out. It's just not that hard to pull a Slant motor out.

I 2nd Slantzilla. I will never again pull an oil pan or timing cover off a slant with the engine in place.
