I bought a new light switch and am having trouble getting the pull out stem to back in and stay. I push the button on the side of the switch when I put it in, but it won't latch and operate the switch.

Any ideas?

Clean the groove in the switch knob shaft very thoroughly, give it a shot of spray silicone, and try again. You don't need to push the release button when installing the knob, just when removing it. If it still won't stay, you may have a defective new switch. Whose switch (brand) is it?
