Hey guys, does anyone have a good source for electronic dizzys? I noticed there are none on E-bay, and I need one kinda soon.
I have this miss, And I've done everything short of re-wiring the car or pulling the motor. (I swapped the 1-bbl. back; This car needs to be on the road and I don't have the time or $$$ to spend now)
I've narrowed it down to an ignition problem. And I'd rather swap to electronic anyway, for the obvious benifits.
Should I buy an electronic distributor and do the HEI upgrade?
Or should I try and find a Pertronix kit?
I noticed Ron used a Lean-Burn dizzy on his car. How does that work? Can you get any advance from this?
Thanks for any help.

Lean Burns have no advance mechanism, so you'd either use them with electronic timing controls (like my buildup) or as a locked out racing distributor.

The Pertronix is easy to drop in and a quality piece if you must have something right now (especially if the alternative is a rebuilt parts store distributor). The electronic distributor with a HEI module can be cheaper as long as you find a quality distributor to start with.

If you can find one with the short throw governor like the late 70's versions, this helps the low compression engines get a small 'leg up' on the advance side of things (setting initial to 10-12.. with a governor that only adds 18 more degrees at full rpm for that magic number of 30 for mech adv. + initial, in an NA motor...)

Good luck, I know it's getting hard, I went to a couple of junkyard recently and found two OEM distributors and they weren't in very serviceable condition for $50 each...(and they both had 15R governors... from 1973-1975)

D.I.,
What is the length of the slot in a "short-throw" governor? I can braze/weld my old ones up easily if I have a measurement.
Also, what is low compression? My engine has a little over 9.25 compression. I know this affects my timing curve, just not 100% on how.
So 30* is the magic number? Well, that gives me a target.
Also, where does the Vaccum canister fall into this? My dizzy is a stock points piece, and it has an adjustable can. How strange is that?

Thanks!!

A 74 dizzy from NAPA is 55.$$, and from O'Realy 47.50. The latter one has a lifetime waranty. Not sure about the NAPA piece.....
Are these any good? It's hard to argue with a lifetime waranty, unless it's a 'junk' to start with.
What do ya'll think? :?:

I bought a napa Dizzy and have been very happy with it. They are all rebuilt, and the quality of the rebuild may vary from one to the next, so be sure to inspect it before you take it home. Also, they used to require a core for these, which may raise the price if you can't give them your old one.

Thanks, I'll sure inspect it before I leave.
They do have a core charge, but it's only $10.00, and it's worth that for me to keep my old one. (IMHO)
