 Post subject: Tranny won't disengage

I replaced my old 3 on the tree tranny with a NP435 granny tranny about 2 years ago and have finally had to chance to start back on my '73 power wagon project. The problem is that I cannot disengage the tranny from turning when it is in gear. I don't have the tranfer case connected up yet and the output shaft keeps on turning even when the clutch petal is pushed to the floor. I tried to adjust it to the point of hardly any freeplay but it made no difference.
The clutch and pressure plate were not changed at the time that I did the conversion. It worked fine the time before. I did replace the throw out bearing with a new one along with a pilot bushing. The bellhousing , crossshaft and clutchfork are also from the original 3 speed set up.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Clutch disc stuck to the flywheel/pressure plate?

Turn the motor off.

Remove the clutch inspection plate/cover.

Tell Lonnie if he wants another beer he has to help.

Get Lonnie to put his foot on the clutch.

Observe what is happening through the clutch inspection cover(motor off)

Use the Big Yellow Screw Driver to carefully unstick the disc from both the pressure plate and the flywheel. Tell Lonnie "shut the fork up Lonnie Im working as fast as I can, eh". While Lonnie is resting start the truck up and try the clutch again.

Repeat till disc is free or you need more beer.

Hi all!!

Thanks for all the great advice. I had a good friend of mine push the clutch petal and there was clearence in between the pressure plate and the disc. In fact I was able to insert a putty knife without a fight and could see right through the gap with a shining light. I hooked up the half shaft to the transfer case and when I started it, It still would not engage,. I then popped the clutch a few times and then it started to work like it should. No more grrrrrrinds!! :D

Maybe the spline has some rust on it? Oh well, the main thing is that she works. I guess Lonnie would of been proud!!

I dunno who Lonnie is, but I have been known to do stuff that made folks make fun of me too! As in this particular problem of a stuck clutch....down south here it gets hot enough that ever now and then in the summers if I couldn't use my truck for a while my clutch would stick. An old timer(a fellow kinda like Chaarlie seems to me) told me the quick fix I used a few times..drive head first (at a low speed) into a stump with high gear engaged....worked every time! Not that I would recommend it now that I am supposed to be older and saner. Course the trucks will take off in any gear, you just move into high with the engine off, fire up and become a human torpedo. I always seemed to remember this trick after a six pack while debating whether to jack er up remove inspection plate, etc when it was 98 with skeeters....
