I just swapped a 1975 BBP 7 1/4 into my 63 Val and now have a "fluttering" sound at speed. Is this likely an axle bearing or something deeper? The unit is a low mileage piece with zero leaks (2.76). I have installed a new u-joint in the driveline and the Ball & Trunion is tight and well lubed. Thanks for any input! - M

Bearings usually make a rumbling/grinding noise. "Flutter at speed" often indicates a problem with the ring and/or pinion gear's tooth surfaces...usually rust pits/roughness on tooth surfaces. Rather common on low-miles units that have sat for years. The lube all drains off the stationary teeth and rust sets in. :-( Usually doesn't affect the actual serviceability of the rear axle, just makes an annoying noise. You may want to pull the cover and check the ring and pinion carefully.

That's a better scenario than I had hoped! And Dan, thanks again for that hose clamp method of removing the parking brake cables. It worked flawlessly!
