are they the same for the small blocks?

i am getting the Tremec TKO-500( ) in about a month and i am trying to get a list a parts of what i'm going to need. i will also keep everyone updated on bell housing mods for this.

I will be getting a clutch from SPEC clutch.

also how reliable is the stock flywheel? i have seen them in multiple pieces, but that is usually after a clutch failure. if i'm going to do this, i'm going all the way.

sorry for all the questions and i'm sure there are more to come. thanks in advance for the help. this board is always a great place to get good advice.

I think the stock fly is fine, but others may disagree. Seems like PP explosion would be the cause of catastrophes.

I believe TOB and pilot are same for SB Mopar, but not absolutely sure.

Are you asking if tob's and Pilot Bearings are the same beetween a slant and small block, than yes. If you mena betwwn a tko and and 833, not sure there.

But anyway to avoid future exlposions I got a Billet Steel flywheel from McLeod - I didnt want to go through any of that again. and besides it was only about $300 and your spec pressure plate should bolt to it if it is in the stock pressure plate bolt pattern.


McLeod can be hard to get on the phone - but here's the part# for the flywheel..

They were bought out by B&M and I am not sure if it's easier to get thm on the phone now or not.

the reason i ask is because i need to know how much is different between the slant and small block. the shop that i'm getting the TKO from is going to supply much of the parts i need to do the swap. but, being a slant six, i will be responsible for parts that are different(clutch and bellhousing, so far). i know the TKO has a 26 spline input shaft, but i am not sure about the pilot bearing part. i have e-mailed spec clutch to see how much it will be to make disc a that fits.

Greg, i saw the pictures of the carnage when you first posted them and i DO NOT want that to happen. i'm kinda attached to my feet. what did your flywheel cost? do you think the stock flywheel would be ok with a better clutch?

After that Carnage, I would not trust a stock flywheel, All the ones I have come across have small heat cracks on the surface, even efter they are blanchard ground those cracks remain, at least in the ones I use.. They are fine for street use. but since I race quite frequently I wanted tha peace onf mind that the sell wheel gives me, and for the money I felt it's was worth it. I know Lou has had no trouble with his stock flywheels, which is fine. It's really your call.

Be sure and get a pressure plate that has the steel plate/ring instead fo the cast ring/plate. This ring is what causes most of the explosions that are seen in clutch/flywheel failures.

just talked to mcleod today. they have a slant flywheel on order for early january, but it measures 13.95", 130 tooth ring gear, and accepts either a 10.5" or 11" clutch. list price from them is $391.71.

this is a truck flywheel, right? the guy on the phone didn't seem like he wanted to be very helpful, which kinda makes me want to go elsewhere. anybody know anywhere else to get a flywheel?

That will not fit in a standard Slant BH. You would need the 11" truck bellhousing, or an adapter to put a SB V8 BH behind the motor.

IIRC, the standard flywheel is 122 tooth (check Doc's article on this site!) and 10" clutch max. Should not be too hard to get specclutch or someone else to make one.

Also, Passon Performance was on this site a while back and was looking at machining up a billet wheel for someone in England.

are the 273 flywheels the same as the slants? i seem to remember reading somewhere that the early ones were.

i found a company that makes the 273 flywheels with 122 teeth on the ring gear and accept the 9 1/8", 9 1/4", and 9.5" B&B and Diaphragm clutches. the company is Wilcap Products & Sharp Equipment Divisions.

I'm not sure but I think the crank hub bolt pattern is different.
