The cargo shelf (or whatever the right nomenclature is for it) in the back of my car is still in great shape, but it's fricken filthy. What's a good way to clean it without damaging the vinyl? It's a bit hard, so I don't want to risk cracking it. Once it's cleaned I'll do the Vaseline trick to get some moisture back into it (you laugh, but it worked great on my truck's dash).

I'm guessing you are referring to the "package tray." Is this in your '74 Duster? The one we replaced in Aaron's '74 Dart Sport was not vinyl. It was a painted pressed board material, trimmed with vinyl edges. So is the one we bought to replace the original.

If yours actually is vinyl, I would think you could use most any mild detergent and a soft damp cloth. You might even consider Simple Green to cut any greasy film. If it is the painted finish, it will probably be sun-baked brittle and will peel or scratch easily. Try a damp cloth but be very gentle.

I wouldn't worry too much if it doesn't hold up to the cleaning. You can replace it with a new one, they aren't that costly (I think $34 at Hardens Muscle Car World).

It sure looks like vinyl. I'll take a closer look tomorrow and see if I'm wrong. If it's not that hard to replace them, I'll just cut a new one out of the thickest MDF that'll fit in there and adhere some black marine grade carpet to it to make it look a bit more professional 8) That way I can put some 6x9 speakers in it in the future...

Make sure you don't make it so thick that it can't slip under the bottom lip of the plastic sail panels, they sit on top of the package tray.

That was exactly what I was thinking of when I said as thick as I can get :P
