The cargo shelf (or whatever the right nomenclature is for it) in the back of my car is still in great shape, but it's fricken filthy. What's a good way to clean it without damaging the vinyl? It's a bit hard, so I don't want to risk cracking it. Once it's cleaned I'll do the Vaseline trick to get some moisture back into it (you laugh, but it worked great on my truck's dash). |

I'm guessing you are referring to the "package tray." Is this in your '74 Duster? The one we replaced in Aaron's '74 Dart Sport was not vinyl. It was a painted pressed board material, trimmed with vinyl edges. So is the one we bought to replace the original. If yours actually is vinyl, I would think you could use most any mild detergent and a soft damp cloth. You might even consider Simple Green to cut any greasy film. If it is the painted finish, it will probably be sun-baked brittle and will peel or scratch easily. Try a damp cloth but be very gentle. I wouldn't worry too much if it doesn't hold up to the cleaning. You can replace it with a new one, they aren't that costly (I think $34 at Hardens Muscle Car World). Jerry |

It sure looks like vinyl. I'll take a closer look tomorrow and see if I'm wrong. If it's not that hard to replace them, I'll just cut a new one out of the thickest MDF that'll fit in there and adhere some black marine grade carpet to it to make it look a bit more professional That way I can put some 6x9 speakers in it in the future... |

Make sure you don't make it so thick that it can't slip under the bottom lip of the plastic sail panels, they sit on top of the package tray. Jerry |

That was exactly what I was thinking of when I said as thick as I can get
