I have 2 model 1920 Holleys ('63 & '72') and 1 that looks similar to a Holley model #1964. I now have a 2 bbl Holley on my 225 /6 and it is running WAY to rich. The motor is stock w 27k on it and no mods. I want to go back w one of the 1bbl carbs , but I'm not sure whats better. I plan on doing a core exchange w the one I choose so no prob there. Please save the "get 4bbl intake and a 390 cfm 4bbl blah". I want this car to be a daily driver and not a drag car. Thanks for your help in advance.

Trading in a Holley 1920 is a very good way to make sure you get a bad one in return. Since you have a Holley 2 bbl is it safe to assume you have a 2 bbl manifold? If so I'd fix the 2 bbl. Chances are the float sank and the fuel level in the carb is too high. I'd rebuild the 2 bbl with a new float before resorting to changing manifolds. Most folks get good mileage and better power with the 2 bbl than the single.

No, sorry I forgot to mention that it has a 1 bbl intake. From what I have gathered by reading and calling, the 2 bbl Holley is junk on a /6.

H'mmm. I've never heard of a Holley #1964, and no such model appears in the Holley master catalogue. Then again, the #2209 exists and isn't in the catalogue. There is a #1946, which was never used on the slant-6, and there is a #1945, which was used on slants from '74 up. Did you maybe mean one of these?
You'll definitely want to get that fixed ASAP; rich running greatly accelerates engine wear by washing the oil off the cylinder walls.
That's a good idea, since you mention you have a 1bbl intake manifold. The 1bbl intake-2bbl carb adaptors, which I'm guessing is how you happen to have a 2bbl carb with a 1bbl intake, make problems and generally don't allow very good running.
Actually...big problem there. "Remanufactured" carburetors from the parts store are trash, see this thread. Every original carburetor traded in as a core means the end of the line for that carb serving anyone well again, ever. The supply is already short enough as it is, please don't make it shorter! Just say "no" to cruddy "remanufactured" parts. If you have a basically sound original carb in need of refurbishment and you haven't got the knowledge, skills, facilities, tools, and/or time to do it yourself, you'll wind up much happier having the carburetor carefully refurbished by a craftsman skilled in the art, such as Max Knudsen.

One major factor that'll determine which carb is the best pick is what kind of adaptations and mods were done to your car's throttle linkage to operate the 2bbl-on-1bbl-adaptor setup.

2bbl Holleys were not factory-installed on slant-6s, though Holley offered a couple different Model 2280s as service replacements for the Carter BBD 2bbls available on the slant-6 from '76-'82ish in North America.

Thanks for the replys guys. The guy I bouhgt the car from put the 2 bbl and went to cable. So, I no longer have the linkage. Also he removed the 4 spd and put a push button auto. Which means I now have the tvr ( kick down) cable to worry about too when swapping to a 1 bbl. The #1920 I have and rebuilt also needs to be rebushed due to a vacum leak at the shaft. Which is the reason I thought it would be cheaper to get a reman. I guess I will have it rebushed and figure out the rest from there.
