Hi all,

I bought my v200 64 valiant when i was 14 and have been tinkering for about 3 (more or less breaking and fixing what I've done, but none the less "learning") years now so I'm quite aware of any new sounds that she might have accumulated in the process.

Just this morning i noticed an intermittent chattering coming from the valve cover area along with the usual puff puff puff from the carb. So anyhoo, i changed the oil and oil filter in a vain attempt to solve it but it still does it. Its not very loud or squeaky but after i give it a rev or 2, the chattering comes back. Should i leave it until it gets really bad or deal with it right away?

Thanks,

Aaron

You'll want to make sure you have the books described in this post. The "chattering" noise you're describing probably means your valves need adjusting. See valve adjustment procedure. There should not be a "puff puff puff" noise coming from your carburetor, so if you'll be a little more descriptive as to what you hear, we can probably help you figure out and fix that, too.

It is time to buy a valve cover gasket and pull-off the valve cover for inspection and a valve lash adjustment.
Don't worry... we can walk you through the process.

Yea, i know that the choke adjustment is a tad off, but it sounds like theres air rushing out in bursts at a quick frequency and its pretty loud and noticeable.

It sounds like a push rod may have "jumped-off" it's rocker arm.
It is time to remove the valve cover, inspect everything and adjust the valve lash.
