I'd think that if they interchange you would have to use the 742 pinion bearings because the pinion stem is different on the 489. Not sure if they use the same races or not. :?

Car Model:
The '489' pinion shaft size is 1.875 and the '742' is 1.750
I have looked around for that "adaptor bearing" and never found one, I think that this bearing is 'wishful thinking' more then a reality.

Mechanically, you can make a .063 wall thickness "sleeve" to go between the 1.750 pinion stem and the '489' main bearing. Next you would have to deal with bearing thickness differences, my research said that this combo would need thicker shims than the conventional 489 set-up takes... stacking up multiple 489 shims solves this problem.

After all this "make it work" thinking... I come to this conclusion: find and use the correct case for the gear set you have.

So... I have a deal for you... I just so happen to need a 489 case, I will trade you a 742 for your 489. We both pay shipping to the other's location. (I hope you are close by!)
Send me a PM if interested.

Doug, if you need a bare 489 I have one I would give you. I am partial to the 741 and 742 myself. :D

Back in the 'old days'... I had a bunch of the 489 carriers and had trouble with the crush sleeve loosing preload and then the gears go "crunch". (you mean I can't speed shift a 500 HP big block 4-speed into a stock 489 gear set??  )

Anyway.. I sell-off all my 489 carriers and focused on 742 gear sets. Just when I finish selling all the 489 sets I have... they come-out with the solid spacer that gets rid of the crush sleeve.

Then I run across a R&P for the new 3.73 ratio and I want one those... guess what... the 3.73 gear set is made for the 489 case and I don't have a single one left in my pile! My butt is sore from kicking myself...
I will send you a PM,
DD
