Hello,

I just got some 14*6 (5 on 4 inch bolt pattern) Cragar S/S mags for my 63 Dart /6.

I've got the correct lugnuts (7/16 left and right hand thread, .80 shank length, .58 shank diameter, 7/16 20 tpi, etc..).

The wheels fit fine on the back, but on the front the little balance weights on the perimeter of the brake drum are interfering with one of the "spokes" of the mag. Thus the mags didn't "seat" properly and I could not safely install them.

Has anyone run into this problem before? What is the cure? Are there special washers that are used to offset the wheels from the drum enough to clear the drum weights?

I was soooo looking forward to having some real good tires on my car (I'm running 185 80 13's right now). Traction is limited, to say the least!!!

Help!

k

You could always grind down the weight, or just remove the weight. If you do so, your wheels will need to be balanced on the car.

The weight(s) (there's 1 on one side and three on the other) look like they are spot welded on there. Anyone know an easy way to remove them (short of grinding)? Big hammer?

Someone said that there is a round spacer that goes between the wheel and the drum that would increase clearance. Has anyone used one of those?

Yup,
I have delt with this before, I was able to position the wheel on one drum so it missed the weight. I also had a drum with a lot of weight on it, I was lucky to have another drum with no weight on it, so I swapped.

I have also used my die grinder to cut a clearance channel through the weight, then marked the wheel so I would install it in the correct position every time. ( spray painted one lug / lug hole position)

I have seen the spacers but do not like using them, they are hard to position and keep over-all balance.

Thanks Doug!

I like the die grinder idea. Seems like going to spacers would change the scrub radius, which could have effects on handling. I imagine that grinding slots into the weights won't affect the wheel balance that much (vs. removing them entirely).

The slotted American Racing wheels I have on my Barracuda have such a large flat mounting surface they interfer with the weights as well as the raised ridge on the OD of the drum.

I am using a 1/4" thick spacer. No balance problems up to 100+mph.

I could not find any spacers that were 5 on 4". The 5 lug spacers all were for a minimum 4 1/2" circle and had quite a large center hole (elongating the slots to fit 4" broke into the center hole). I wound up getting 4 on 4" spacers and redrilled them for 5 lugs. The only issue I was concerned with was if there would be enough thread engagement in the lug nut. In my case the end of the stud is even with the outside of the lug nut. Rule of thumb is there should be one full thread protruding. I check the torque reguraly and nothing has loosened. The shanked lugs used with the Cragers should not be a problem.

Hi Dave!

Thanks for the tip. I ended up using a die grinder and grinding down just enough of the weights to allow for the rim to fit. One tip - make sure that you *really* grind down enough of the weights - if the wheel touches the weights - even a little bit - your car will feel like it's coming apart every time you hit the brakes. Found this out the hard way!

I actually like your idea better - but my studs are fairly short.
