I have an '83 motor that I'm removing all the emissions crap from. The distributor has a single pick-up with no mechanical or vacuum advance. Would this be a good distributor to keep in my glove box, drive to the track, stab in and dial in for 37* total timing? Or am I out to lunch.

"No mechanical or vacuum advance" means there is no ability to dial in anything but the initial (basic) timing, which you cannot set to 37° and still have the engine start. The only real use for these non-advancing distributors is as a part of a computerised engine management system incorporating electronic fuel injection. Some of those systems have the capability of controlling ignition timing via programmable maps, and for that you need a nonadvancing distributor. If you're not running either that kind of system or an original lean-burn system originally equipped with a nonadvancing distributor, you really need a distributor with mechanical and vacuum advance systems.

The only reason I ask is that we have a 440 race car and it has an MSD distributor that is locked in at 37* and seems to start no problem. I thought I could make this work in the same capacity as a race only device on my slant that I drive to the track with my conventional distributor. It was just a thought.

It could work like a locked out racing distributor. There are timing retard boxes available if you have a cranking problem, so why not try it and see?

I'm running a Lean Burn distributor right now, but I do have computer controlled timing. That may change, as I'm getting ready to go crank trigged and possibly run a distributorless ignition.

Slants do not like 37* of timing. :D

I'm just being hypothetical. I've never built a race slant but like I mentioned before we do race a 440, so I'm trying to relate and see if this unit will work for that application. All timing aside.
