I just bought the front disc setup from a 75 valiant for my 65 valiant. I need to match the bolt pattern for the rear. is the rear end in the 75 strong enough to hold up to the power of a well built slant? or should I search for a bigger one?

Which rear is under the '75?

Is the ratio in the '75 acceptable?

How "well built" will the slant be?

If the '75 was a Slant car it will most likely have a 7-1/4" under it. A V-8 car should have had an 8-1/4".

8-1/4" is much easier to get gears and Sure Grip units for, and much stronger.

7-1/4" still has some decent gears avilable, but SG units are harder to find.

The 4.5 pattern axles from the late 7-1/4" will not fit an early 7-1/4" housing. A 7-1/4" w/o a SG unit is not a good option for a performance build, but will get you the 4.5 bolt pattern until you can find something better.

The rear end in the 75 is stock, based on the size I would say it was a 71/4 and it was a slant engine. I do not know the gear ratio right now. I was just planning on taking the whole rear end out. and mounting it in mine. will the drive line mount up ok? or are there major mods for that? or do I need to grab the drive shaft? sorry when I say well built, I meant the 200 hp range. I am looking at the basic bolt-ons and some head work. from what I have read that should get me there.

I had a stock 1975 7 1/4 rear for years.

You wont be happy with 200 hp and the gears the 75 rear has.

You can easily swap in a different gear ration.

Using a ~200hp slant and a 5 speed I managed to eventually hoop the 7 1/4.

I say rock it till it squeels and then look for something better.

The one I got came from a 74 and it has 2.76 ratio.
The early 273 Hypo Darts and Barracuda came with them. 8 3/4 were a option. The weak link is spider gears. back in 67 a friend's mom got a new 273 Hypo Barracuda and it had a 2.93 7 1/4 in it ( peg leg ). He wore out several sets of tires before he exploded that rear doing neutral drops. I don't think that the 7 1/4 is as bad as it's rep. They have a great used price, ( free ) most of the time. Plus the big bolt ones have 10'' brakes.

Some cars in the late run of A-bodies had 9" drums in the rear unless it had discs up front...
