The original rear end was the 7 1/4. As you noted the 8 3/4 will bolt up and the 8 1/4 from later A-dody models will also work. In both cases driveshaft modification will be needed so neither is truly a bolt and go swap.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

Since these were common in 1973-1976 A-bodies for HD/ Performance use, they got coupled with Disc Brakes so they are only LBP...

If stuck with SBP and a stockish rear, you're stuck with the 7.25" or 8.75" rear...

good luck,

Large bolt pattern rears also came as 7 1/4 rear axles. Thes are cheaper and won't require a driveshaft modification. Look for 1973-up disc brake cars, or power durm brakes. MOST, not all a-bodies after 73 got large bolt pattern, but also SOME all drum brake cars after 73 got the small bolt pattern brakes. The post-73 small bolt pattern is rare, but documented.

The easiest swap is to find a 73-up 7 1/4 rear axle. It will bolt right in and probably have the large bolt pattenr, but always measure before you buy.

The downside (performance wise) is that it will most likely be geared for economy, not performance, ubt with gas prices the way they are i would say this is a good thing.
