hello everyone,i really need some help with this one!

well the other day my windsheild wipers stopped working.

i pulled the switch and wiring harness it looks good, but what do i know.

i tested the switch with my multi-meter and it works.

when i turn the wipers on i hear the wiper sound (swish swish) but the wipers are not moving.

and since portland is going to have non-stop rain for the next 6 months my car is basically usless with out wipers.

Hi Neil,

It sounds like the Wiper drive link has popped loose. Either at the Motor, or where it ties into the connecting link.

It's not electrical if you hear the motor turning and can look under the dash and see the motor 'leg' moving... It's usually the link or wiperarm bushings, you can get these at Napa or in the HELP section for your year of car... make sure you put a bit of grease in the cup when you reinstall the link 'nub' into the nylon bushing...

Yup, almost certainly one or more broken bushings. To get to the bushings, you start removing stuff from under the dash until you have clear access to the wiper links and motor. See this thread for more info.

im in prtland too, and mine has popped off a few times, just poke ur head under there if u can fit and pop it back on if it hasnt broken

well i replaced the plastic connector and tryed in vein to connect it. so i finally got a push nut and cut the plastic connector in half and then used teh push nut to secure it.

ok working wipers ....... only for an hour

right now the passanger side wiper is not working it stoped

prolly the connectors there orginal and quite brittle plastic.

i also replaced my heater hoses with metal flex tubbing and did my thermostat today.

tomorrow i'll finish up teh wiper repair. i was upside down under my dash all day i feel quite light headed. and my hands are very cut up

Next time when you try to put the nylon bushing onto the wiper nub, a set of pipelocks/ channel lock pliers (pump pliers...) does help greatly...

Remove the instrument cluster first- it actually comes out pretty easy. Just loosen the steering column so that it hangs down, pop off the speedo cable and wiring harness from behind the cluster and unscrew and pull the whole piece out enough to disconnect the ammeter. make sure you mark the ammeter leads or it will read backwards when you put it back! (you did disconnect the battery first, right?)

Once the dash looks like a huge gaping hole (takes 15 mins!) it is much easier to reach in and pop those suckers on. I used a pair of vise grips to get them seated. I did not know what they looked like or how to grease them when I did it, so now I gotta do it again (squeek-squeek!) but don't worry, it isn't hard.

Might not be a bad idea to buy spares in case they become hard to find soon.

thanks for the advice rdr that would make that a lot easyer. and i have to pull the instrument cluster again aways. looks like rain or shine that's what i am doing tomorrow.

Midi,
Makes it much easier to snap in the nylon bushings, if you first place them in HOT water for a couple minutes to soften up a bit. Put a dab of white lithium grease into the "cups" before snapping the linkage together.

By the way, if you haven't already done it, now would be a very good time to replace your wiper pivot seals, since you're that deep into it anyway. Schumacher sells the kits at http://www.engine-swaps.com. It may save you a trip under the dash in the future.

thanks for the reminder and great advice jerry! both wiper seals are shot and if it has rained the night before i get a nice leak down my leg when i back out of my driveway.

I have gotten by for a few rainy days with a good cleaning and rain-x. As long as you are moving it really helps.

It is a pain but doing the seals and putting it all back together can be done in one evening. The schumacher kit works great and is not at all expensive.

If you get non original clips, I would give them a good look and trim any flashing or burs that will make it hard to get them in. The bushings go in hole and then the pin side gets pushed in.

i keep some aquarium sealant since i breed african cichlids and have a 150G tank. so i used that to seal the wiper leak problem and its holding with wipers working.
