Post subject: Master Rebuild Kits?
PostPosted: Mon Sep 03, 2001 11:44 pm
Just thought I would see what the thought was on where and which master rebuild kits are good for a 225?

I have a guy interested in buying my sailboat, and if he does, then I will have the money for my motor rebuild.

Thanks for any ideas and suggestions,
Dan

There are a lot of sources that advertize these kits and they do vary in price and quality.
Seeing that the SL6 is a "slow mover" in the automotive parts world, I would guess that many of the so call rebuild "kits" are not pre-assembled and waiting on the shelf but instead, these are made to order once they have a buyer.

So, this means that you need to do a little "homework" and ask what "brand" parts will be in the kit. I have seen some great deals out there for inexpensive kits make-up with good stuff, also seen kits with "no-name" parts but everything is correct and seems to work fine.

PAW, Summit, JC Whitney and many other local warehouses and parts stores will carry these so start getting quotes.

I ordered my kit from PAW. It came with Fed-Mog parts, and victor reinz gaskets. I was pleased I could upgrade the order for $6 for Moly Rings.
I was whole heartedly displeased that I had to buy the whole kit and couldn't upgrade the camshaft they offered (yet a co-worker builds lots of chevies and he can swap for a Hotter Comp Cam for $50 extra from them). Also the kit didn't come with pushrods, nor was I allowed the possibility to upgrade the oil pump.
Nice kit though for about $335...

Here's a wholesale only engine parts place. I've never ordered from them myself but know of someone who did and just used there personal home business name. http://www.fertig-march.com Prices seemed to be downright CHEAP. Perhaps one of you out there with an official "business" can follup on this and get a "Slant 6 club business account" status. ??

I purchased a kit from PAW. It came with Clevite 77 bearings, Hastings rings (stayed with the iron), King cam bearings and ROL gasket set. This was a simple rebuild kit for $132. I then added a COMP Cam for $119 and PAW house brand lifters for $29. Everything else I purchased locally.

I would guess PAW provides whatever they can get as part of these kits.

Whitneys sells a very inexpensive, thourough, quality kit. However, they are idiots.

It was $89 for caskets, bearings (yes, rods and mains!) and seals. federal mogul, felpro, natianal oil seal etc.etc.

Next trick. try to get them not to screw up the order because in this case nothing apears on thier screen asit apears in the 'log (catalogue), and no matter who you talk to in the food chain, it never gets fixed. Dough hit the nail on the head "I use them for swaybars becasue they can't screw it up" but I bet they could try.
