Other than weight whats the difference in dimensions in the 2 transmissions. Can i substitute a 727 in the place of a 904, and if so how much of a pain is it going to be. Will the linkages line up and is one longer than the other are my main concerns. Also is there a difference in the torque converters?

727s for slants aren't nearly as common as the 904. The 904 is lighter, a bit shorter, uses a smaller slip yoke, has less frictional loss and uses a different torque converter. My experience has been that if maintained the 904 will usually last as long as a 225. If you want something heavier duty a slant 904 built with A998 (318) guts is plenty strong. The linkages are the same, BTW.
