My linkage is binding when I try to change gears. When unhooked I can move the selectors at the transmission threw the gears no problem. When I hook the linkage on it binds up. I went threw the procedure in the book to adjust the linkage but it still binds up

Worn motor mounts, worn tranny mount, or worn bushings in the linkages. Have you checked all three?

Did you adjust the tension collar at the base of the steering column?

Hello,

Very frustrating problem indeed and Dan's comment re. the collar is pointing to an often overlooked problem. Because I didn't realize I had bushing problems I ultimately pulled my 3 speed and put in an automatic when my bushings if redone would have solved the problem. Check those bushings, and they can be made on a lathe if need be. By chance I have a complete good setup including column I could be induced to let go if you feel the need. I got it eventually in case I wanted to go back to 3 on the column, but I don't forsee that now and would rather have someone who can use it do so than keep it stashed in case.

The top bolt is striped. the one on the bottom is ok. I can now get it to go threw the gears but its very sloppy and binds sometimes. how much for a new bushing. I am going to need all the bushings for all the linkage some time soon. I got it to $#!+ finally and its now movable. so anyone know where i can find the bushing at the column and the part #'s for it?

I found similar grommets at a local hardware store and turned my own set of bushings. I haven't come across any after market or NOS sets yet. I still have the email a member sent me a while ago on how to adjust the shift rods, if you'd like to see it, I can forward it to you.

I have the factory service manual that has the procedure to adjust the rods. my linkage has had issues since i bought the car 3 months ago. The threads for the tension collar are worn with the top one being striped. I would just like to have the parts to replace it before i take it all apart.

Mine has become a 2 speed. Sometimes it binds up on the 1-2 shift. It has been enbarrassing! I can use first but need to shift to reverse, then to second.

I bought a 3 speed floor shifter. It will get saved as I am going to a 833OD.

I've never known any of these to work right. Even a brand new 77 Chevy truck! Always the 1-2 shift!
