The octane boost that you get in a little bottle from the parts store?

The stuff does a good job of turning money into smoke.
Some brands will leave a little "color" on your spark plugs, making them easier to read.

If you want something that actually has a bit of an effect, go to a paint store and get a gallon of toluene. That stuff is around 114 octane, cheaper than most of the octane boosts in a parts store gallon for gallon. Jerry and I used it on a turbo Miata project when we had a tank of questionable gas and had to show a car at a dyno exhibit; it seemed to make a difference in knock.

Not quite that sort of boost... I think the one you're thinking of has a good deal less detonation resistance.

Toluene works well, although I have always added 3-4 oz of oil to a gallon of toluene. Do a search on "homemade octane booster" you will find lots of info.
