 Post subject: Power steering problems
PostPosted: Wed Sep 26, 2001 11:54 pm
I recently swapped my 64 Dart from manual to power steering. I put in the first box, got it all setup and when I started the car it turned all the way to the right by itself. I read my manual and it said to move the valve housing on the top of the box upward but that made no difference. I then decided it must be the box that was bad since I found it in the trunk of a parts junker I bought. Next I went to a junkyard and bought another box. I installed it and this one turns by itself to the left. Did I get 2 bad steering boxes or is there something else I dont know about. Thanks all.

I would guess 2 bad boxes. When I did 2 swaps a while back I picked up 2 rebuilt boxes and did not have that problem. Unfortunately, BOTH boxes leaked and I had to return them. I think they sat on a shelf too long and the seals dried out. I suggest laying the box on the fender and hooking it up for a test before installing and finding out that the seals are bad AFTER you have installed it.
