OK, just the other day on here I found a post that contained info about A/C. There was a link to an A/C manufacturer for our cars....but it wasn't Vintage Air or Classic Air.

For the past hour i've been searching this site and my internet history, and I can't find it for the life of me! A little help, please?

On the subject, has anyone ever found a bracket to mount a Sanden compressor in the factory location, using the factory (rear) pulley on the crankshaft? Or is it necessary to fabricate your own bracket? My car originally had A/C, but it was gone long before I bought it. And as others have found, there's not much room to add another pulley/belt in front of the crank because of fan interference (in a Dart).

The only source I found ( http://www.oldairproducts.com/shop/index.php ) took my money, then told me two weeks later that they couldn't get the part anymore (and had no suggestions for getting one).

Yeah...has anyone ever installed one of the nostalgic air parts systems? The price seems nice, I wonder if all the hardware is good and mounts easily.

I haven't, but what's your vehicle? That will dictate the level of work involved.

Keep in mind that all of these parts sources (nostalgic air, classic auto air, vintage air, ackits.com, etc.) sell a lot of the same parts. You get the same compressor mount/drive kit no matter whom you buy it from, for example.

I can't remember whether the old-style York/Tecumseh compressor mount/drive kits' compressor drive line was behind or in front of the main fan belt. There were a few different varieties of this kit; I will add to my neverending "to-do" list some phone calls to see if I can pull up any old drawings. The bracketry itself was fairly simple and would be easy to reproduce if it is NLA, and there are numerous good bracket converters that mount a Sanden/Sankyo/Seltec in place of the York/Tecumseh.

Another option would be to find a 1961-only slant-6 car with Chrysler-made A/C (rotsa ruck  ) and copy those brackets. That year, the 6-cylinder A/C setup used a Tecumseh compressor rather than the Chrysler V2.

If all of that fails, given the CNC and other fabrication skills present on this board, it seems the currently-available mount/drive kit could be looked at carefully and reproduced in modified form to shift the compressor rearward.

(Or, come to think of it, one could avoid a lot of this dancing around by reproducing the factory's own 1978 Sanden compressor mount setup...)

Wouldn't THAT be nice! Anyone interested? I'm still collecting my fabricating tools/equipment, and don't have the qualifications or experience to try anything like that yet. I haven't even learned to use my new welder yet.

My understanding is that other members have had trouble finding space between the stock fan and the water pump/alternator for another belt for the A/C in a-bodies. My '72 Swinger had the factory A/C belt run from a pulley at the back of the crank set, so that's where I'd like to install a Sanden compressor. Alas, the bracket I found at Old Air Products looked like the version used in '78 slants... Too bad they don't carry it anymore.

I have 2 ideas (please keep in mind I have manual steering)

Could I install the A/C compressor where the power steering is supposed to be? That way the compressor uses the pully closes to the radiator (alone, not shared)

If I moved the alternator to the power steering spot (I know people have done this). Could I then install the A/C compressor in the stock alternator location?

Has anyone tried either of these?

Nestled down next to the block, outboard of the water pump? It'd take a custom bracket, and belt wrap would likely be an issue (it's hard enough to get good, solid drive of the relatively easy-to-turn P/S pump in this location).

Not nearly enough room to do so, and even if you managed to sneak it in there, it'd make changing the front 2 or 3 plugs an enormous pain. Also, there'd likely be belt-tension problems.

Was this Sanden compressor mount for Slant sixes one year only, 1978?
Are they hard to find in junk yards?

I just installed a Classic Auto Air unit in my 69 Barracuda Slant 6 and there is no room for any kind of a fan. They add a pulley in front of the power steering pulley, and the compressor is so far forward there are only 2 inches between the clutch and the radiator core.

There is no room for a good electric fan, only inadequate thin fans.
If I could move the drive belt back to the power steering groove there would be room for two good electric fans, but the p/s groove is 3/8" and the a/c groove and belt is 1/2".

If the factory bracketry mentioned locates the a/c compressor pulley and drive belt in a line behind the fan/alternator belt, all problems would be solved.

What vehicles had the slant 6 and Sanden compressor? F, M, J bodies? Trucks? Here in southern California most all cars air conditioning so I would think it would have been a common mounting setup; but, perhaps, too old for wrecking yards.

The bracket I found from Old Air Products (that is no longer available) was listed for, I think, an '83 slant six. Only. The diagram showed a Sanden compressor, though, mounted with the belt at the back of the crank pulley set.

My assumption is that this was the same bracket (or close to it) used on the '78+ slants, but I never had one in hand to try.

Like Dan said, SOMEONE has got to be willing to fab up a batch of these for the .org gang and make a few bucks. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller... ?

I finally took some pictures of what I did with my A/C. I removed the balancer and installed a rear most pulley. Modified Classic Auto Air's slant 6 Sanden compressor mount by cutting off the compressor mounting tabs on the mount plate and moving them back to align with the rear most pulley, then notched the idler mount back to match.

Had I realized or had the forethought that someone would be seeing these areas, I would have done a cleaner job. (bottomside)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for posting those pictures. It answers the next question I had which is whether the Sanden compressor could be moved backward to line up with the factory rear pulley without air cleaner or other interference.

I will still try to find the factory parts as a first choice.
I forgot that I have a 78-81 Dodge truck parts book. I have attached pages covering the slant 6 Sanden installation. Anyone know if the same brackets are used in passenger cars?

The compressor shown in that factory manual is not a Sanden. It is a Chrysler C-171. The sanden compressor will not fit on those mounts.
