Well, I rented the Groove-O-Matic to install o-rings in the block. It seems like a pretty nice tool. It is very compact and I should have no problems grooving the block while it is in the car. I put it in a bore and tightened it up to see how it would run in the bore. Seems to turn in the bore very nicely without any drag. Wish me luck.

I have a copper head gasket and will be grooving the block only. There is no way for this tool to work on a head. It depends on the depth of the cyl bore to help center/stabilize the tool.

what is the purpose of the groove? how big/deep is it? is it in the deck surface or in the cylinder bore?

I think he's putting a groove around each cylinder so that he can run metal o-rings to get a handle on extreme compression.

The tool will cut a groove around the cylinders approximately .030" deep and .038" wide so a copper wire .040" wide can be inserted into the groove. This gives a positive bite into the head gasket to help eliminate blown head gaskets. It is mainly used in turbo, supercharger and NO2 applications because of the higher cylinder pressures.

That's great shaker. Be sure to post some pics of the results.

OK, NO ONE is going to go for the obvious joke and say that tool looks groovy?

Yeah, it's .040". It sticks up .011" to .013" to bite into the gasket. I've seen staunless wire used before too.
