Hi i've owned Mopars for quite some time but this is my first S6,its a 73 Duster. This is going to be my daily driver and I'm already enjoying it. I just picked up a super six set up (intake,carb,kickdown link and air cleaner). The guy I bought it from says it's off a 77 volare. What I need to know is how the linkage is hooked up. if someone has a pic or knows where I can get a diagram that would be great this way I won't have to buy a book on volares. thanks,Richard

Here's a BBD on a '63 Valiant. Looks like he has an unsilenced air cleaner using a chrome 273-4 top and a 273-2 base.

Cecil, where'd this pic come from? I agree it's a 273-4 air cleaner lid (same lid as the 11" diameter slant-6 1bbl '61-'69 air cleaner), but I've never seen a 2bbl base plate for this style of air cleaner, that I can remember (which is a damnuisance, because I need one)...I always imagined it should exist, but I've never seen one in real life or in the parts books; the 2bbl V8s got larger/flatter snorkel-style air cleaners with the base + sidewalls as one piece and the lid as a top plate only, as it seems. Have you seen such a base? Or is this one in the photo a custom-mod job?

Dan, the pic of the '63 Valiant convertible is by the owner. He is from Tallahassee and I have seen the car recently at the Melbourne FL Mopar show/swap in Janurary.

The 273-2 air cleaner you are refering to is a silenced AC. This unsilenced AC base in the pic is from a mid '60s 273-2. At least I THINK that's the base he is using as I have 3 of them and mine appear the same. I am using a 273-2 base on my '68 V100 and '68 Signet with the original 1bbl unsilenced top. My '84 D100 has the same base along with a 1bbl top off a junker I had.

I had previously posted about this base for someone that wanted to use correct looking AC for a BBD on a pre-'70 car. You replied that it would not clear a '60-'66 A body hood and that the 273-2 was a silenced AC.

The top of AC top is 5.2" above the valve cover with this base. I thought I was going to have to make a custom base using a 2 bbl center in a 1bbl bottom to get enough drop, but I found this base at a swap meet for $5 and tried it. Clears my '68 A bodies, and IF it is the same base on the '63 in the pic, looks to clear a '63-'66 also.

I used to think that if it had a snorkel, it was a silenced AC, but there are some unsilenced ACs with snorkels. Unsilenced is when the AC is open 360* at the bottom reguardless of snorkels.

Cool! I will have to renew my search for such a base plate...and I just found it in (and only in) the '65 FPC, where it is listed as "Unsilenced, w/2 barrel carburetor, w/273 cu. in. eng., Barracuda". Options are with or without fitting for crankcase ventilation. This air cleaner is not listed in '64 or '66 or any other year; looks as if all other pre-1970 273-318 2bbl engines in passenger cars got the large/flat type with the round snorkel. I haven't checked truck/van FPCs.

Interestingly enough, there's no listing in the '65 FPC for 273-4bbl air cleaners...and mine's the final-edition March '66 printing...nor in the '66 FPC, either! :shock:

Actually, the 1bbl air cleaner with this lid is silenced by means of the controlled gap between the lid's dropped sidewalls and the turned-up rim on the baseplate. I think the unsilenced 4bbl baseplate had no such rim. The only unsilenced factory 1bbl air cleaner I'm aware of is the one used on 1962 170 engines, which has a lid without sidewalls, and a baseplate with a sort of partial inverted-cone deflector but mostly just open sides, see

Yep — they don't have the baffle behind the snorkel.

Not so; both the small/tall and large/flat slant-6 1bbl air cleaners had a 360° air inlet around the bottom, but they were silenced by the controlled gap between the sidewall of the lid and the turned-up rim of the baseplate. For proof of concept, try using the small/tall base with the large/flat lid. The gap gets much larger, and the intake gets much louder. That's how I got my first-ever traffic ticket as a teenager, was with exactly that base/lid combo on my '65. I was so absorbed in the intake roar that I failed to notice the speed enforcement. I don't think I was too far over the limit, if at all, but the cops heard my intake roar from the bottom of the curving hill and pulled me over. Gave me a seatbelt ticket instead of a more costly 'cause they didn't see a shoulder harness through the windshield of my '65 :shock:

I bought the first base to use on my '84 D100. I knew it would clear the hood. Once I got the BBD on my '68 Signet, I tried it and was supprised it cleared, so I found another base.
Please don't give me any grief about the Wally World yard stick! :oops: The drop measures almost 1 1/16".
