Post subject:  Engine Misfire/No-fire on Cyl. #5

Well, I have at last got the old beast running. I bought my 66 Valiant V200 for 300 bucks and trailered her home. After many weeks and curse works, and some absolutely awesome help from Dusteridiot, I was able to finally get her cranked up after sitting for 12 years.

There are 2 things that are weird, and I have thoughts on one, the other I don't know..

#1, The engine misfire is not caused by lack of spark or fuel to the cylinder. I know this because taking the plug out and laying it on the valve cover during cranking shows good spark.

I also know that it is getting fuel because after running the engine for just a short time, the plug is usually covered with gasoline.

So, in my opinion the only thing missing is compression. There are 2 options, the valves aren't sealing, and/or the rings are not sealing.

When running, if i blip the throttle, I get smoke spurts from the oil pan through the dippy, and out the valve cover vent. So this tells me that I have bad rings and/or rings that just aren't sealing due to lack of use.

The other thing would be valves/valve seats, but I really don't feel froggy enough to take it apart unless I am 100% sure that it needs to be done.

The same color smoke that I get from the oil pan and valve cover is coming out of the exhaust, and it smells like burning wood. Wood being burnt by say a router, not actually a fire. Friction is the word I am looking for.

I let it come to operating temperature, and nothing changes. I know its been sitting for some time now, and that pretty much nothing is sealing, so what is a good way to "break in" an old engine?

Its got a new timing set, water pump, ballast resistor, condenser, coil, and plugs.

Dusteridiot came to my house and set the cam and ignition timing for me, so I know that these 2 things are good. But as far as internal issues, I have no idea.

Thanks

dont forget head gasket!compression and leak down test time. a leak down test will put pressurised air in the cyl. you can then grab your stethoscope and listen for air. exhaust pipe(exhaust valve), intake(intake valve),crankcase(rings/headgasket/random) sometimes you can see bubbles in radiator. we actualy got a chick in our auto program to listen in th P/S pump cuz thats why the car "had a misfire while turning"

If that plug is wet then its gas fouled even if it does show to be sparking. When it gets under load it will not. Put a new plug in it and try a spare new plug wire with it, or atleast swap it wire the wire on a differnt cylinder to see if the dead cylinder moves with it. BUt new plug will be needed, not cleaning it.

I did actually replace that single wire to see if that would fix it... to no avail, and I installed a new plug into that cylinder, and that didnt fix it either.

I would try a leakdown test on it, but at the moment, I dont have a compression or cylinder leackage tester to do that with.

Have you checked the valve lash?

Should be able to check it in the next few days, I'll post what I get when they are measured.

So now I know for sure that it is a compression issue. So I tore the head off... all of the bolts holding the manifold came off ok, the studs on all but 2 came with the nuts, but that is better than breaking them all.

I took the head off, and not to my surprise, the #5 piston has a small chunk missing off the side of it. So thats why #5 is dead,

The #3 exhaust valve isnt round anymore, its wobbly shaped, and not sealing for beans, so thats why it didnt do well at all.

#1, I cant really figure out exactly what is wrong with it at them moment, but I'll find out when I clean everything up.
