Anyone out there know where to find an original AM/FM radio to fit the original dash of my 1971 Dart Swinger? AM leaves alot to be desired, and I don't want to change the dash plastic. Did they make an FM radio ? Thanks.

They did make one probably came in the later 74-76 Darts. Sometimes you can find them on Ebay. I just made a console that goes from my Dash down to the floorboard and put in a AM/FM/CD into that and then put speakers on each side of the console.
There are companies out there that can make a radio to fit your location but they are pretty expensive.

There are at least three other options:

- Put a modern radio under the seat, where no one will see it.
- Get an "FM Converter" that plugs onto the back of the current radio.
- Have a company convert your current radio to AM-FM

A browse through Hemmings Motor News will get you ads for companies that offer the last two options.

Until I learned about Tayman Electrical, I was thinking about replacing the AM radio in my 65 Barracuda with something from Custom Autosound Mfg, possibly their Secret Audio:

I went with the new deck under the seat deal. 3 zip ties and just run the wires under the carpet where they overlap beneath the seat and you're done. You could always hang it under the dash or build a console, but then you run the risk of people seeing it and breaking in. I just prefer the under the seat stereo because when you look in my car, all you see is the original AM radio in the dash and nothing else.

Chrysler did offer an AM/FM that year; if you can find one, they are quite repairable if you get the Sams manual (the're still availble), unless the output (impendence-matching) transformer is fried. I've been unable to find a source for those transformers and been unwilling to rewind one myself.

The most common thing to go is the main power transistor or the electrolytic capacitors, both are inexpensive and fairly easy to replace.

If you find one and open it up and you see burned wires and a scorched transformer, you could have it gutted and newer electronics installed. Year One offers that service, but it is quite expensive.

Speakers do go bad with age, and a new speaker would make it sound a lot better. Most of the speakers I've removed of that vintage had cones that just crumbled.
