 Post subject: 1962 225 into a '72 Dart
PostPosted: Mon Nov 05, 2001 8:26 pm
A friend of mine is trying to put a '62 225 into a 72 Dart. The problem he's running into is that the hole in the crank isn't big enough for the pilot of the converter to fit into. Short of changing/boring the crank or trying to make the '62 904 work, anyone have any suggestions? I know changing converters won't work because of the difference in input shaft splines. I guess changing the pump and clutch drums is an option, but I'm not sure if he can handle doing that (I do transmissions for a living, but I'm a couple states away). Any input is appreciated - thanx

Either get a late slant, or splurge the money for a new convertor that has the proper nose for the pre-67 crank, yet will drop into the late 904 tranny. (I have a friend whose having the same problem this week putting a '64 413 into his late PowerWagon with a '75 A-727.... I think the convertor only cost him $150...)

You pretty much laid-out the options Mark,
Change the input shaft on the tranny.
Change / bore-out the crankshaft to fit the larger T.C. hub.
Buy a special "Problem Solver" torque converter which has the early "small nose" but the later "large spline" inside.

Also, make sure your friend has swapped the oil pan and pick-up from the 72 over to the 62 engine.
